BJJ Black-belt Roberto Godoi had an impeccable performance at the World Master Jiu-Jitsu Championship, held last August in Las Vegas, Nevada. He won double gold in the master-3 age group with convincing wins including the absolute final that he finished by using a lapel choke, which he dubbed the Godoi choke.
In an exclusive interview following the victory, he discussed his performance. “I like to compete, I like to win, but what really makes me happy is to perform my moves, even when I lose,” he said, then adding how he managed to apply the chokes:
“I was able to get this great result by locking this hold that I call Godoi choke, which is a move that I do when the opponent is on all fours and I am above him, be it when he sprawls or when he turns when I pass his guard. If I am able to hold the collar when I am kinda like in a north--south position, I get within, spin. It’s an awkward position; people are not very used to it; it annoys the neck, it annoys the body, and it just worked. I am stoked.”
