The adjustments of the DLR guard are very efficient to help you neutralize a passer's movement as soon as they manage to open the guard and stand up. Of course, though, the position has more than just defensive virtues. Note how Renzo Gracie uses the De la Riva’s cogs to surprise the passer with a lob sweep, ending up on the mount. The secret is to position your hips under theirs -- thus your opponent becomes lighter, which makes the move work.
