Carlson Gracie Jr. talks modern competitive BJJ and explains the right way of drilling. He says competitive posture has shifted, and that has negatively affected our representatives in MMA. Gracie discusses the differences between this generation and his.
Sometimes you go to do a drill, and the guys want to do it with more speed, and sometimes the speed is harmful. You have to do all the techniques step by step -- not seeking to get done faster, or do more reps. BJJ is not horse racing, so it has to be done step by step, so you are able to execute the technique perfectly.
The way of competing today is focused on points and advantages. I won't say it's all athletes that compete this way in all fights, but mainly the training. Nowadays you go to a gym; the guy learns how to compete -- not that he learns true BJJ. In my generation, everybody attempted submissions.
