The art of holding an opponent's gi to handle it and take the fight where you want may be, in the beginning, quite a mystery to the practitioner. Not just doing the correct grip, but also knowing how to break it, will open up a range of possibilities in BJJ. Thus it is common to see a fight for the best grip, whose winner gets to steer the match their way.
If you notice that your opponent has done a better grip than yours, it is time to break it and restart the fight to impose your own. In this video, six-time world BJJ champion Xande Ribeiro teaches how to break your opponent's grip with just one hand, either standing or in the closed guard.
